Luxury Bed and Breakfast - When Price Is No Object

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

There is pampered, and then there is pampered, and when it comes to luxury bed and breakfast accommodations where price is no object the pampering can take on a whole new dimension most people can only dream of.

Each of these unique properties is a travel destination in and of itself. Take for example Little Palm Island located in the lower Florida Keys. A 5 acre island skirted with white sandy beaches featuring 30 suites, this exclusive enclave has been highlighted in Fodors, Frommers and Travel and Leisure magazine. But, don't expect to be fed for the $690-$1,490 per day rate. For that you'll need to pony up an additional $135 for the Full Meal Plan (breakfast, three-course lunch and four-course dinner) and $115 for the Modified Meal Plan (four-course dinner plus a choice of breakfast or three-course lunch), not including tax and service fees. However, considering that meals are served in the private Oceanside dining room and have been applauded by Mobil, Zagat and Golden Spoon, this may be a bargain after all.

If you can afford the price of admission, you may find yourself situated in one of 28 thatched roof Oceanside bungalows outfitted with a sitting room, private patio with garden, indoor/outdoor showers, whirlpool bath and king size canopy bed. If that is simply too pedestrian for your tastes, consider booking one of two Island Grand Suites which feature British Colonial furnishings, a bathroom for him and one for her and of course, the obligatory outdoor hot tub.

For a completely different experience in escaping the mundane, consider The Point Resort, situated on a 10-acre peninsula along Upper Saranac Lake about 150 miles from Albany. This is truly old world rustic ambiance at its finest. Built in the 1930's for William Avery Rockefeller, the nephew of John D. Rockefeller, the resort features 11 guest rooms located in four buildings on the property. The resort has received outstanding reviews from Hideaway Report, Forbes, USA Today and Conde Nast Traveler and has a Mobil Five-Star rating. Guests pay per night from $1,350 for the Iroquois room in the Main Lodge to $2,600 for the Boathouse. For complete privacy you can rent the entire property for $20,150 (yes - PER NIGHT).

However, for this kind of money you will undoubtedly find some features you don't have back home, unless your bedroom back home is furnished in original Adirondack antiques, has a lake view, stone fireplace and one of a kind hand -crafted bed. You'll also likely find fully stocked bookshelves, a lake-view private deck or patio, dressing room with walk-in closet, breakfast/sitting room and perhaps a waterfall or oversized shower and double soaking tub in the en-suite bathroom.

If you get tired of all of that private luxury, venture into the public areas where you'll find the Great Hall dining room and Pub. Although you may think this is a laid back rustic mountain retreat, be sure to bring along a jacket and tie as it is the custom at this Inn to be so attired for evening meals.

For a completely different take on a luxury bed and breakfast retreat, you might want to check out Triple Creek Ranch in Darby, Montana. Sure you can play cowboy on a real life cattle drive but at the end of the day, a tired cowpoke can rough it in one of 19 log cabins surrounded by incredible wildlife, wilderness and mountain scenes. You can put up the heels of your boots and enjoy the rustic atmosphere of your wood-burning fireplace, telephone with data port, wet bar and refrigerator or chill out on your private deck (some with private hot tub).

Located in the middle of the Bitterroot National Forest a couple hundred miles west of Helena, Montana, the rates for this cowboy adventure run from $650 for a one-bedroom Cedar Cabin to $2,495 for the two-story, 3,600-square-feet, and three-bedroom Ponderosa cabin.

If you tire of the seclusion of your luxury cabin you can make your way to the fitness center, putting green, outdoor hot tub and pool or tennis court. Boredom won't be a problem if you stay busy with one of the many activities available including fishing, hiking, horseback riding, fly casting lessons, Hummer tours and in the winter cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. After all of that you might do what any modern pampered cowboy would do and opt for an in-room massage.

There are many ways to spend your leisure time and your money. But for a totally unique once in a lifetime experience consider a luxury bed and breakfast get away.

5 Tips for Finding the Right B and B for You

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

Let's assume you have decided to have a weekend getaway for you and your partner. What follows is the process I would suggest to create that memorable escape you are looking for.

Determine through conversation with your partner what you are both looking for in a bed and breakfast. If you don't voice it or write it down you might have opposing views and the one who takes the initiative and does the research will end up with what they want but the other may be sadly disappointed.
When do you plan to go? Winter, spring, winter or fall... and does it matter where you live? The season may not change enough where you live for it to make a difference. Depending on the area you might not have as big a selection of B&B's in the off -season. Some may close for a time while owners take their own break. Others may have different booking rules and regulations on off -season weekends, such as bed and breakfast reservations on weekends are required to be for both Friday and Saturday night and must include 2 rooms. The first is likely not an issue but the second might be more of a challenge. Perhaps, to solve the accommodation fulfillment you could consider inviting another couple to go along with you. The cost would be no greater, all requirements would be fulfilled and you might have a fabulous time hanging out with friends.
Determine what you can afford to spend. This isn't supposed to put you under financial stress. It should be a fun time together you can plan and look forward to and have fond memories of...a time you will want to repeat.
Where in your area do you want to go and how far are you willing to travel for a weekend trip. Is there somewhere you have always wanted to stay in a bed and breakfast inn? Perhaps an area full of vineyards, a great hiking or biking mecca, the host city or town of an event you have always wanted to attend. Check out the bed and breakfast association for that area. Some B&B's might specialize in just the weekend you are planning.
What do you want to do on your B&B getaway? Maybe you love to shop, or hike or read, or try new restaurants. Maybe you just want to stay at a bed and breakfast where you can park the car and head out the door after your morning meal to explore the area. That could mean exploring a lake or river in a canoe, kayaks or a paddle-boat if it's a waterfront guest house. Or it could mean walking to local shops and browsing. It might mean going to a museum you've always wanted to check out. Perhaps you are a hiker and the B&B is adjacent to the trail you have always wanted to spend a day on. Maybe you can do a bicycle tour of local vineyards. Decide what it is you both, or all if you are now two couples, want to do and then do your search through the area B&B directory. Often one or two contacts is all it takes to find out if they can make your getaway the one you have imagined. Start your search and tell them about your plan/dream. They may very well delight in helping you make it all come true and can put you in touch with any businesses you might be interested in making reservations with.

Talk, plan, research, book it and then count the sleeps until your B&B getaway.

Elaine Robbins is an owner/operator of Robbins Tuktawayin Bed and Breakfast. This is a waterfront guest house located on Gull Lake in Gravenhurst, Muskoka, Ontario, one of North America's top three summer vacation destination. After many years of talking about opening a B & B she finally decided to actually do it in the summer of 2011 and have no regrets. After being a host and making the acquaintance of many other B&B hosts Elaine felt compelled to write about all things B&B. Check out their website at http://www.robbinstuktawayin.com/.

The History of Bed and Breakfasts

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

If you're planning a relaxing trip almost anywhere in the world and are looking to soak up some local culture, bed and breakfasts are a popular less-touristy tourist attraction, and come in a variety of flavors across many, many countries on six continents. No, Antarctica is not one of them, but who would holiday in Antarctica anyway? Generally, when you arrive at a bed and breakfast, you will be warmly greeted by the homeowner and proprietor. The owner of the bed and breakfast will often offer a tour and a brief sample of the usually rich history of the house, and, as is in the name, a hearty breakfast in the morning. Most guesthouses, as B & B's are sometimes called, are located in coastal areas that have distinct seasons for tourism. In fact, most B & B's are only open a few months out of the year, and originally served as supplemental income to the homeowners' main income sources. Travelers would pay a modest fee in exchange for lodging for the night and a hot breakfast before setting off on the next leg of their journey. Each B& B can be drastically different from the next because of the emphasis on specific cultural heritages, especially European and Asian establishments.

Some popular Irish bed and breakfasts offer "farm stays," where country folk and city slickers alike can get away from it all and dig into the Irish countryside. Guests spend the day helping around the farm by milking cows, collecting eggs, and tending to the animals. Other B & B's in Ireland focus on fishing or Gaelic heritage and culture. Some offer nearby experiences in hurling, Ireland's 3000+ year old national sport involving a ball and in which players hold a softball-sized paddle with a long handle.

Japanese bed and breakfasts often offer traditional Japanese meals, and teach Japanese traditions to anyone willing to learn. Shoes are removed upon entering the house; meals are taken seated on the floor, et cetera. One B & B offers tours of the Nagasaki Memorial Museum, centered on the atomic bomb and its aftermath. Many Japanese B & B's will offer traditional robes and slippers to guests wanting to taste the Japanese way of life.

American guesthouses can be found in more than just coastal areas, and tend to be run more year-round as businesses. They will often be concentrated in areas which wineries are present; they seem to go hand in hand. American B & B's on the Eastern side will generally have colonial heritage, and serve as mini-museums on the era in history.

Country Walks: Keeping Active Whilst Experiencing the True Beauty of the Countryside

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

Walking is the perfect activity for a healthy lifestyle with almost anyone being able to take part. Plus you can walk anywhere and anytime, it's free and you don't need special equipment.

It is a well-known fact strolling in the open air is a great remedy for many mental and physical problems that have become commonplace in our society today. Stress of work, home and life in general, especially for city dwellers is a common problem for millions of people in Britain today.

Many health advisor's and doctors agree taking time out from everyday tasks and walking in the countryside will be a great benefit to anyone that takes the time to do so. In fact A 1999 study published in the Annals of Behavioral Medicine showed many university students who walked and did other easy to moderate exercise regularly had lower stress levels than those who did not walk often or those who exercised strenuously. But the subject of country walks should not only be aimed toward people with stress related illnesses; but towards all people in general.

Younger people who rarely see the countryside or the elderly who have lost the inclination to take walks for one reason or another are prime examples of those missing out on this healthy pass-time. This is a real shame, there are many beautiful areas in Britain, with public footpaths weaving through many beautiful country locations.

One such location is Eythrope in Buckinghamshire that boasts some of the finest country walks I have had the pleasure to venture down. Situated on the edge of the Rothschild estate, a mere half mile from Stone near Thame /Aylesbury and only one mile from the coveted Hotel and Spa at Hartwell House. This easily accessible but still very much countryside location has walks in abundance. These include 'The Aylesbury Ring,' 'The Midshires Way,' 'The Oxfordshire Way' and 'Swans Way.' Walking around the area is a treat to the senses with its many types of wild flowers, trees, butterflies and other wildlife. Furthermore there is a wonderful little stream with clear flowing water and A quaint little bridge where Eythrope's private gated road crosses the River Thame then continues on through the wonderfully maintained Rothschild estate. These few examples are just a small percentage of the many must see locations waiting for anyone who is willing to take a stroll.

For those that live far away or would be holiday makers, I recommend staying in a hotel or bed and breakfast for a few nights to soak up the atmosphere and allow yourself the time to appreciate your surroundings. Luckily Eythrope has just the place to stay.

Situated right in the heart of the area is a delightful picture-book cottage bed and breakfast with a thatched roof, exposed beams, beautiful furniture, panoramic views, wild flower gardens, roses in abundance and ample off-road parking.

On a personal level I would love to see more walkers in the countryside, more children or elderly people reaping the rewards of this healthy outdoor pursuit, because as stated above - walking in the countryside is a great way to exercise and is not only good for physical health but also aids in mental well-being. It's a great way of stepping back from the stresses of daily life with a feeling of freedom that is hard to find in modern life. So come on, LETS GO WALKING!

Badgers Cottage Luxury Bed and Breakfast is an idyllic Grade II listed cottage sat in open countryside on the edge of the Rothschild Estate, in the Hamlet of Eythrope.

Things to Do in St Augustine, Florida

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

Visualize strolling through the streets of an ancient city, where the territory was once ruled by natives, and subsequently English, Spanish and French explorers. Where once upon a time pirates pillaged and with the help of providence and a hurricane, the English routed and destroyed not only a French fort but their formidable sailing fleet as well. Where would you be? St. Augustine, Florida - the oldest European established, and for many, the most fascinating city in North America.

As you can imagine, a city with this kind of history naturally has a charm and unique blend of the old and new unlike any other place in North America. St. Augustine is a magnet for historians, artists, sun seekers, families, honeymooning couples and water enthusiasts alike. Situated on the eastern coast of Florida about 40 miles south of the Florida capital of Jacksonville, the Old City as it is known, is a delightful blend of romance and activity.

To start your exploration, you might begin in Old Town; a unique historical district covering 144 square blocks which includes 29 buildings listed in the National Register of Historic Places. You can stroll through over four centuries of history comprised of boutiques, museums, charming specialty shops and restaurants and walk through the Plaza de la Constitucion, which was established by Spanish Royal ordinances in 1573, thirty-four years before the English settlers of Jamestown sloshed ashore in Virginia, and is the oldest public park in the United States.

"Modern" St. Augustine traces its roots back to Henry Flagler, an early railroad pioneer who in the 1880's developed the city into a destination for wealthy leisure travelers. One of his developments, the former Hotel Alcazar, is now home to the Lightner Museum. Built in 1887 in the Spanish Renaissance style, architects Carrere and Hastings were commissioned by Flagler to design the Alcazar and the Ponce de Leon Hotel (across the street). The two young architects later designed the New York Public Library and the U.S. Senate office building. An architectural treasure worth visiting for its historical significance, the Lightner houses an impressive collection of Gilded Era treasures.

Another historical marvel is the St. Augustine Pirate & Treasure Museum which houses the largest collection of authentic pirate artifacts in the world, including a real pirate treasure chest and flags bearing the Jolly Roger. For more nautical enlightenment, visit the St. Augustine Lighthouse and Museum built in 1874.

Although St. Augustine is filled with history and a wealth of shopping and dining diversions, don't forget to bring your towel and sunscreen. Although you'll find the surf a little rougher on the east coast of Florida than on the Gulf of Mexico side, there is plenty to do beachside. You can sail, scuba, kayak, wind sail, swim, jet ski or take a pleasure cruise up and down the coast. Or, when you dry off you may want to try one of several world class golf courses in the area.

For a little excitement you might want to visit the St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park, one of oldest continuously running attractions in Florida. First open on May 20, 1893, the park now houses over 20 species of crocs and features numerous reptiles, birds and mammals. There are daily animal performances and educational demonstrations. For the bizarre you might want to check out Ripley's Believe It Or Not, famous for its oddities and unusual displays of all kinds.

To compliment the history of your visit, consider a stay at one of the many historical bed and breakfast inns located throughout the city, some of which lie in the heart of the historical district. Plan your activities in advance as there are so many things to do in St. Augustine, Florida, you won't find it difficult to easily fill a week with exciting (or relaxing) new experiences.

Llandudno North Wales - A Taste of Nostalgia

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

In my youth I travelled to many far off edges around the world: The kind of places you need to jump on a bus full of chickens along with the local wild life to reach some village perched on what seems like the end of the earth. Despite that, I have only ventured to Wales once; as a child and that was with the school. It was a fairly mundane experience. Therefore when friends mentioned that they had discovered one of the best Welsh boutique hotels in Llandudno near the West Shore - I couldn't help but be curious. Could this be true? Bona fide Boutique hotels in Llandudno? This nostalgic Victorian seaside resort being the last place I would expect to find anything outside the mainstream soiree of Brit hotels and B and B's: A place where ice cream along with buckets and spades ruled. However now, after taking a trip to this old Victorian seaside resort I have a whole new perception - And I do indeed, stand corrected.

I decided to stay at the same boutique b and b hotel my friends recommended. I arrived late morning to a warm welcome which instantly made me feel at home. My room surpassed all expectations. Furnished practically, it had a very plush exotic style: It certainly lived up to its name Andaz; which means style and elegance in Hindu....I believe! A quick power shower to get the blood flowing and it was time to explore.

I walked from my hotel situated on the quieter west shore to the busier north shore promenade. It didn't take long and the views of Anglesey and the Snowdonia mountain range were stunning. Plus, no better way to work up an appetite - Although it had been a while since breakfast! I settled down into a good old fashioned ale house with pie and chips on the menu: The low fat salads could wait until Monday!

Unquestionably a walk along the old Victorian pier on the north shore simply oozes nostalgia: In a good way. The blue flag beaches are remarkably well kept and offer up the perfect place to set up your picnic basket: Or indeed, get out your bucket and spade. There is a cable car that takes visitors up to the Great Orme country park. However, never one for heights I opted for the Great Orme Tramway: Still a great opportunity to take in the views WITH your feet remaining firmly on the ground. There is a small summit complex atop the Great Orme: A cafe and restaurant as well as a small gift shop.

After a great day occupying myself with all those classic pastimes which have defined the British seaside holiday for eons I arrived back at my hotel refreshed and relaxed. Mine was one of the only hotels in Llandudno with a restaurant serving authentic Indian food; which is my all-time favourite. The food was as excellent as was the service and the wine list was surprisingly rounded. I don't know why I missed all the good things a British seaside holiday has to offer. Nowadays classic seaside resorts like Llandudno have become more cosmopolitan and yet the old nostalgia remains: No wonder so many people are coming back: And without doubt, I will be doing the same.

Space Boutique Bed and Breakfast Llandudno is one of the premier hotels llandudno. This boutique B and B stands out from the crowd with its unique and bespoke furniture, bathrobes and slippers to indulge each guest in luxury.

Getting Canines In Shape For Travel And Staying At Dog Friendly Hotels

Obesity is not just an issue for humans- it can also be a problem for canines. To prevent consequences that require drastic measures, dog owners should take the weight of their pet seriously. Prior to traveling, canine owners should get their dogs in shape for plane rides and stays at dog friendly hotels. Healthier dogs are better travelers, creating a more pleasant experience for the owner and the pet.

Statistics vary by country, but a general estimate is that 20 to 35 percent of dogs are overweight. Up to ten percent of domestic dogs may be overweight enough to be classified as obese. The average life expectancy of an obese dog is shortened by at least 15 percent. Issues resulting from canine obesity include heart disease, diabetes, and joint and bone damage. Getting the canine into shape requires diligence on the part of its owner.

Keeping the dog healthy helps travelers in many ways. Pets that weigh less have a greater chance of traveling in the plane cabin with their owners. A small breed dog that is under 18 inches long and weighs about 11 to 15 pounds can travel in the cabin, while an obese dog of the same breed may not meet the weight requirement for plane cabin travel. Dog owners who want to keep their pets nearby should consider this before feeding a pooch too much "people food."

Obese pets are afflicted with many problems, some of which can affect travel. Joint damage may make it difficult to get the pet in and out of the hotel room and digestive issues can cause messes on the floor. Obese dogs with diabetes will require more attention while traveling because some need insulin shots. Coat and skin issues may necessitate that the dog be bathed during travel, something that can be quite inconvenient if a grooming facility is not nearby and the hotel bathtub is tiny.

Since dogs do not have sweat glands, they regulate their body temperature by panting. It becomes more difficult for an overweight dog to regulate its body temperature, resulting in heavy panting. This causes anxiety and stress, which can lead to other issues including heat stroke. When a dog is in a stressful situation, it tends to pant more, worsening the issue.

Healthy dogs have increased stamina and are better able to tolerate various weather conditions due to their improved ability to breathe. They are more equipped to handle travel and a stay in a new environment that may feature temperatures very different from those at home. Once the pet arrives at the destination, it will be ready to explore, not ready for a nap.

Dog friendly hotels may have activities for canines but only those dogs that are healthy will enjoy them. The dog will be prepared to play, run, swim, and explore with its owner. This makes the vacation an enjoyable, not stressful or tiring, experience for dog and owner. Upon arriving home, the dog will be ready for the next adventure.

Dog friendly hotels are an absolute must for the family that treats the family pet like a true member of the clan. When it comes to dog friendly hotels, nothing beats WoodhavenCountryLodge.com! Visit our website today for more information.

Free Room Booking Software - Dangerous False Economy?

AppId is over the quota

We all like free, but is free room booking software actually saving you money or is it not only false economy, but a threat to your accommodation business?

Maybe I'm being over cautious. I haven't looked at every single piece of free reservation software so I can't give you a complete review but here are my thoughts based on those I have seen. Bear in mind I'm doing this from the point of view of someone who has their own accommodation business, so this stuff is as important to me as it is to you.

First off, do you need some kind of online booking program anyway? What's wrong with the good old telephone? Well the fact is, more and more people just want to check your website and book online. They're busy, they don't have time to chat. They just want to get the job done. That's not true for everyone, of course - those who want can still give you a call - but traveling executives in particular have a laptop or maybe an iPad and just want to book your bed and breakfast, family hotel or whatever as quickly as possible. If you don't have a room booking program of some sort, you are losing business.

So, quite understandably, you look for free room booking software. It's makes good business sense to reduce costs where possible. There can be problems though. It's not so much that the providers are being deliberately deceptive - I'm sure that's not true in many cases - but if you get reservation software free, what can you really expect from it? How well supported is it? Is there someone you can call if you get into difficulties? Will you spend time learning how to use it only to discover it doesn't have all the features you need? If you upgrade your computer, is it still compatible? Can someone connect to it with their tablet computer, Blackberry, whatever?

Worse case scenario, what if you advertise it as being available but it breaks down? That's not just inconvenient, it will cost you customers.

All of those are vitally important questions that you absolutely must get answers to. Then there's your time. How long will you spend finding and testing free hotel reservation software? Even if you eventually find one that does what you need, is it hands-off once you've installed it?

I know the argument that most people have: good accommodation reservation software is both expensive and complicated. You need to be running a big hotel chain to afford it and be an IT expert to get it running properly.

That's been true in the past, but not any more. There are solutions that are cost-effective for the smallest bed and breakfast but that have the flexibility to handle many rooms and even multiple locations. They are hosted remotely so you have nothing to install, nothing to worry about upgrading, you just provide a link to them and they handle the rest.

It's an ideal scenario, and for a few bucks a month it's both a viable alternative and one that's a lot better for your business than any free room booking software.

Do you really want to risk free room booking software when there's a low-cost alternative that will give you everything you need? I like this one, it's been improved recently too: Room Booking Software.
